The normal cornea is semispherical in shape, both vertical and horizontal lines are seen in sharp focus. A point-like source of light, e.g. a light bulb, is seen as a light-colored point.

If the cornea is curved unevenly, making it more elliptical in shape, the result is an astigmatism. The image is distorted. A point is seen as a line, for example. The incoming rays of light can be distorted both by the cornea as well as through the curvature of the lens itself. A curvature of the lens is often combined with farsightedness or nearsightedness.
