The natural lens of the eye is not altered during this operation, but an additional artificial lens is implanted in the eye to correct vision problems. This operation is usually performed to correct severe nearsightedness, farsightedness and high astigmatism.
The natural lens is replaced by an intraocular lens which has been calculated to extensively correct your original vision impairment. This procedure is primarily preformed in cataract surgery and for correction of severe nearsightedness, farsightedness and, using special lenses, for high astigmatism as well.
A thin layer of the cornea is prepared with a laser beam or a scalpel and then folded upward like a flap. Another laser is used to ablate tissue from the inner section of the cornea. The flap is then folded back and pressed into place.
A laser is used to ablate a section of the central cornea approx. 0.1 mm thick in order to compensate for the vision impairment. This procedure is used to correct nearsightedness (myopia) of up to approx. –6 diopters and astigmatism of up to approx. 3 diopters.
PTK is used to treat scars on the surface of the cornea and cornea injuries. After superficial removal of the top layer of the cornea, the surface of the cornea is ablated in a procedure similar to welding. A contact lens is then placed on the cornea for approx. 3 days, followed by therapy with eye-drops for approx. 3 weeks.

Patients often come to us with vision impairments which require combined treatments. These treatments are referred to as “bioptic procedures.” The results are usually very good, although a longer total treatment and recovery phase is to be expected.
All procedures are invoiced in keeping with the German regulations governing doctors’ fees (GOÄ) or similar regulations so that costs for the procedures may vary according to type and scope of the preliminary and follow-up examinations. As an example, prices may vary by nearly €500 alone for the different models of lens implants. Not until after examination can we determine what the costs will be and inform you of them. With the exception of cataract operations on clouded lenses (by law only when medically necessary in the public insurance fund sector), refractive operations are always a private medical procedures not covered by health insurance companies.
On request, we will inform you of the cost for a refractive treatment.
A medical certificate for sick leave cannot be provided for such an operation. The procedures are performed on an outpatient basis.
